Working on “My Fair Lady” project

Tesol Greece Newsletter 120 October-December 2013

The first reference of this column to “the spice element” in teaching was through the “short play” pathway. The play used was entitled “One of these days” and the aim was not only to amuse, involve and stimulate students but to also highlight practices which are certain to weaken a lesson and must be avoided by teachers and students alike.

The second approach to the “spice element” in teaching of this column was through history related material, with students bringing to life Clytemnestra’s thoughts, feelings and reactions following her husband’s, decision to give in to the request of the Oracle. King Agamemnon sacrificed their daughter Iphigenia to enable the Greek fleet to sail to Troy. The project “Clytemnestra: life has not been good to me” was presented in the form of dramatized act out and was inspired by the “The horrible history series”. It involved students in the research, editing, production and presentation stages of the project and serves as a model of an activity that harnesses the inexhaustible source of intriguing material offered by history.
