UNLOCKING THE  FEEL OF WORDS

How is it that some words stay with us with minimal effort while others escape us like elusive butterflies? Can we  manipulate our minds so that words stick with us? Which is the best method to befriend and embed new vocabulary? These are challenging questions and seasoned teachers know only too well that there is no stand-alone method and it much varies from learner to learner. I do not claim that there are as many methods as there are personalities but neither do I delude myself into seeking the single method that will burn the words into our minds for good. The visual learner will greatly improve vocabulary retention by reading and writing but the kinesthetic or the other types of learners would need additional approaches. So we, teachers should be looking for the combination of simple, flexible and powerful techniques which work for the particular personality, at the particular time.
